Mobile App for Smart Choice — Mobile Backend API

Backend Developer @ Ecomlogy

Situation

The mobile application required a dedicated backend API and data layer to support client functionality and synchronize application data. The main challenges were:

  • Establishing the first backend API from scratch.
  • Defining initial backend services and data models.
  • Creating service contracts for mobile clients.
  • Supporting cross-platform mobile clients.
  • Coordinating backend development with mobile developers.
  • Working asynchronously across different working times.

Task

Build the foundational backend infrastructure and API layer for a cross-platform mobile application, providing the services and data required by the iOS and Android mobile clients. The project involved establishing the backend from the ground up and collaborating closely with the mobile development team.

Solution

Designed and developed a dedicated Java backend using Play Framework, MySQL, and a client-server architecture. The backend provided APIs and data services for the iOS and Android mobile applications developed by other members of the team. The implementation established the initial:

  • API structure.
  • Service endpoints.
  • Data models.
  • Backend business logic.
  • Client-server communication layer.
  • Database integration.

Contribution

I was responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the backend API from the ground up. I:

  • Established the initial backend architecture.
  • Designed backend API structures and service contracts.
  • Designed data models.
  • Implemented Java backend services using Play Framework.
  • Implemented MySQL database operations.
  • Supported communication between backend and mobile clients.
  • Collaborated with iOS/Android developers.
  • Investigated backend requirements from the perspective of mobile-client needs.
  • Maintained backend functionality throughout development.
  • Worked asynchronously with the distributed team.

Technologies

  • Languages: Java
  • Frameworks / Libraries: Play Framework
  • Database / Storage: MySQL
  • Application Server / Infrastructure: Tomcat, Linux
  • Build / Development: Maven, Eclipse
  • DevOps / Source Control: Git
  • Mobile: iOS — client developed by other team members; Android — client developed by other team members

Results

  • Delivered the foundational backend API for the mobile application.
  • Established backend architecture and data models from scratch.
  • Provided shared backend services for iOS and Android clients.
  • Enabled client-server communication and application data synchronization.
  • Successfully collaborated with the mobile development team in a distributed working environment.
